CanSurvive GYN Cancer Support Group to become part of Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation
Organizations join to further combined mission of research, awareness, and support
Birmingham, Ala., December 12, 2014 – The CanSurvive GYN Cancer Support Group will become a part of the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation as of January 1, 2015. CanSurvive has been providing emotional, spiritual, and educational support for women diagnosed with and affected by gynecologic cancers since 1998. The Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation was founded in 2009 to provide funding in support of research in the early detection of ovarian cancer and to increase awareness and educate the public about the disease. CanSurvive will become a program of the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation, with members of the former CanSurvive board sitting on the LCBOCF board, and a program committee made up of volunteers to plan program activities.
“We are very excited about this move,” said Cheryl Bourn, CanSurvive Board President. “We have worked with the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation for several years on awareness initiatives and our joint fundraiser Tickled Teal. They have sponsored our Sunday support meetings, so our partnership is a proven one.” Jim Crandall, LCBOCF Board President, noted that the foundation had wanted to start a support program after its founding, but decided instead to support CanSurvive to avoid duplication of services. “Because of my experience having a daughter with ovarian cancer, I know how important it is to provide support to the patients and the caregivers. I have always admired what CanSurvive does and the foundation is pleased to bring it on as a program and continue that important work. This move will allow us to streamline administrative operations on both sides, while increasing our capacity and resources.”
The CanSurvive program will continue to offer two meetings per month and be an active participant in community events and awareness activities for GYN cancers. Although all donations for CanSurvive made after January 1, 2015 will go through the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation, donors will be able to designate their donation specifically for the CanSurvive program.
